For many people, late-night eating is just a habit. It’s quiet at night, no one is around to see you eat, and it’s a peaceful time to enjoy your favorite foods.

Unfortunately, this habit has got to go if you want to lose weight and stay fit. It is “bad” to eat late if you tend to engage in mindless eating. If you are not truly hungry and you are responding to stress, it can be easy to overindulge and sabotage your weight loss efforts.

How bad is it to eat late at night for weight loss?

Eating late at night doesn’t cause you to gain weight, but eating “too much” late at night will.

Eating a “heavy dinner” late at night is a bad habit to get into because it doesn’t leave enough time before going to bed to digest your food well. Generally, it takes about three hours to digest a typical dinner of about 600 calories. If you are eating late at night when you’re about to go to bed, you are not giving your body an opportunity to burn those extra calories. It leads to weight gain.

What type of foods should you avoid eating late at night?

– Sugar rich foods like chocolates, cakes, cookies, ice cream, pastries etc.
– Fried foods like potato chips and French fries.

1. Eat a Satisfying Dinner 3 Hours Before Going to Bed
Eat balanced dinner with the appropriate amount of calories, healthy fat, protein and fiber. This will give you a feeling of fullness, reduce late night hunger and prepare your body to slow down and get ready for a good night sleep.
2. Say “No” to Food Pushers
There are lot of people out there who express their love less through words and more through food. If you reject the food that they offer, it would be like rejecting their love. And because of that, they might even feel hurt.

On the other hand, eating when you are already full can be a compliment to the cook but it’s no favor to your waistline. So when you are at somebody’s place or in the restaurant, and your relative or friend force you to eat, just say “no” in a way they don’t feel bad.

3. Avoid Visiting Restaurants Late at Night
Obesity has become a socially contagious disease. It spreads from person to person almost like a virus. It spreads from family members and friends. 4. Brush Your Teeth If You Feel Like Snacking Late at Night
Have you ever eaten a chocolate chip cookie or a platter of nachos right after brushing your teeth? When your mouth feels fresh and clean, you will be less likely to eat immediately.
5. Keep Your Evenings Interesting
Many people snack at night because they’re bored. Keep yourself busy with some activity and you’ll find it easier to refrain from mindless snacking. Take a night class, plan an evening exercise session, go for a walk, meet friends or call a friend.

What to eat if you are still hungry before bedtime?

– Handful of almonds
– Fresh fruits like apples, watermelon, oranges and papaya

Does sweating mean you are burning more calories? 
I have often been asked “If I sweat during my workout, am I burning more calories?” Is that the case?
Well, the answer is “No”.

The amount you sweat during your workouts has nothing to do with the amount of calories you are burning.

Sweating is just your body’s way of cooling itself off when it gets too hot, not necessarily a way to determine how much calories you are burning.

Think of sweating as your body’s air conditioner.

When your internal temperature begins to rise, due to either metabolism, cardio exercises or working muscles, the sweat glands are stimulated. The evaporation of sweat off of your skin produces a cooling effect.

Sweating is not necessarily an indicator of the amount of fat/calories burning taking place but our bodies regulating our temperature to avoid overheating.
Our bodies constantly sweat in order to maintain healthy body temperatures. During exercise or any physical activity, our bodies compensate for the extra work taking place by releasing even more liquids.

Sweat is water loss, not fat loss.

Sweating is not connected to fat loss. However you might see a downward shift in your weight from the loss of water.

This can actually be dangerous and lead to severe dehydration.  If you find that you have lost significant weight after your workout, you should replace those fluids with a drink with electrolytes (to help replace the salt you have lost during your sweat session).

Don’t be fooled by “sauna suits” or other “weight loss clothing” either.

These products will cause increased sweating, which will lead to temporary water weight loss, but can be counterproductive as exercise intensity and endurance will be compromised. Sweating during your workouts is a good thing, but not a good indicator of your level of exertion.

Why some people sweat more than others?

Another fact to consider is that individuals are born with two to four million sweat glands.  This often accounts for why some people sweat more than others.  In addition, men’s sweat glands are more active than women’s.

So if you see the people working out next to you drenched with sweat, don’t worry, they may not be working harder than you, they might just have a million more active sweat glands.

Burning more fat means you have to burn more calories than you take in. The bigger your calorie deficit is the quicker the weight and body fat drop.
